Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Vimeo Begins Layoffs Following $1.38B Acquisition by Bending Spoons

Vimeo Begins Layoffs Following $1.38B Acquisition by Bending Spoons:

Vimeo has started laying off employees across its global workforce, according to a report from Business Insider, marking a major shift for the video-hosting company shortly after its acquisition by Italian tech firm Bending Spoons.

Bending Spoons, which acquired Vimeo in an all-cash deal valued at $1.38 billion last year, confirmed the layoffs but declined to disclose how many employees were affected. The Verge reports that the cuts may be substantial, citing a LinkedIn post from Vimeo’s former VP of Global Brand and Creative, who said he—“along with a large portion of the company”—was impacted by the layoffs.

TechCrunch has contacted both Vimeo and Bending Spoons for additional details.

Founded in 2004, Vimeo has long struggled to compete in a market dominated by YouTube. In recent years, the company has attempted to differentiate itself by leaning into artificial intelligence. In 2023, Vimeo announced plans to introduce AI-powered tools for scriptwriting and video editing. More recently, in October, it rolled out additional AI-driven creator tools aimed at integrating filmmakers’ content directly into AI-based workflows.

Bending Spoons has been actively expanding its portfolio, having acquired several well-known technology platforms in recent years, including Meetup, Evernote, and WeTransfer.
