Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Ukrainian Startups Continue Innovating and Growing Despite War

Ukrainian Startups Continue Innovating and Growing Despite War:

When edtech company Preply reached unicorn status earlier this year, employees at its Kyiv office marked the milestone with cake — a small but meaningful celebration amid ongoing conflict.

Four years after Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine’s startup ecosystem has demonstrated resilience, continuing to launch products, expand teams, and attract investment. Preply itself plans to use funding from its latest round to recruit around 100 engineers worldwide, including in Ukraine, where roughly one-third of its engineering workforce remains based.

While defense technology startups have drawn significant attention due to rapid battlefield innovation, Ukrainian entrepreneurial strength extends across multiple sectors. A shared foundation of engineering expertise and adaptability is helping companies contribute to the country’s broader stability and recovery.

In a nation facing a larger military opponent, avoiding mobilization is generally discouraged. However, certain startups can obtain special status allowing essential employees to remain in their roles if their work supports national needs. One such company is Aspichi, according to founder Victor Samoilenko.

Founded in the United States in 2021, Aspichi shifted direction after the war began. The company is now recognized for Luminify, a mixed-reality mental health solution designed to help Ukrainians cope with wartime trauma. The platform works closely with military units and a network of clinics delivering psychological support to civilians.

The impact of war extends across society — affecting soldiers, veterans, grieving families, and millions displaced internally or abroad. Even residents who have remained in Kyiv continue to experience profound psychological strain. Samoilenko reflected on this reality, noting that the effects are widespread, recalling how his daughter spent multiple holiday celebrations sheltering underground, underscoring the depth of the emotional toll.
