Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: U.S. and European Authorities Dismantle LeakBase Cybercrime Forum

U.S. and European Authorities Dismantle LeakBase Cybercrime Forum:

Law enforcement agencies across the United States and Europe have shut down LeakBase, a website accused of trafficking stolen passwords and hacking tools. Prosecutors described the platform as one of the largest online hubs for cybercriminal activity.

Earlier this week, authorities seized the site’s infrastructure and database. Investigators say the forum had amassed more than 142,000 registered members and facilitated over 215,000 messages exchanged between users.

Operating since 2021, LeakBase allegedly hosted a vast and regularly updated archive of compromised databases. These included hundreds of millions of stolen account credentials, along with credit card details, banking account numbers, and routing information.

The takedown marks the latest effort targeting marketplaces that trade in stolen login credentials — data frequently used to hijack personal accounts and steal sensitive information or cryptocurrency.

Europol confirmed that approximately 100 enforcement actions were carried out globally, including measures against the forum’s 37 most active users. Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation redirected the site’s domain to servers under its control, effectively disabling access.

Visitors to LeakBase now see a seizure notice stating that the forum’s content, private messages, and IP address logs have been preserved. According to reporting by The Record, citing FBI cyber official Brett Leatherman, the investigation led to more than 13 arrests, along with searches and interviews involving 33 suspects, and the capture of the forum’s full database.

Authorities say the operation is part of a broader international crackdown on cybercrime networks that profit from stolen digital identities.
