Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Inferact Raises $150M to Commercialize vLLM, Valued at $800M

Inferact Raises $150M to Commercialize vLLM, Valued at $800M:

The team behind the popular open-source AI inference engine vLLM has officially launched a new startup, Inferact, securing $150 million in seed funding at an $800 million valuation.

The funding round was co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners, confirming earlier reports that a16z had backed the vLLM project. The move marks the formal transition of vLLM from an open-source research tool into a venture-backed commercial platform.

Inferact’s launch follows a similar trend in the AI ecosystem, where research projects are rapidly becoming startups. Just this week, the SGLang project was commercialized as RadixArk, which sources say raised funding at a $400 million valuation in a round led by Accel.

As the AI industry shifts its focus from training large models to deploying them in real-world applications—a phase known as inference—technologies like vLLM and SGLang are gaining strong investor interest. These tools are designed to make AI systems faster, more efficient, and more cost-effective to run in production environments.

Both vLLM and SGLang were incubated in 2023 at the UC Berkeley lab led by Ion Stoica, co-founder of Databricks. Inferact is led by CEO Simon Mo, one of the original creators of vLLM, who told Bloomberg that existing users already include major platforms such as Amazon’s cloud services and a large-scale shopping application.
