Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Google Cloud is flooding the AI zone

Google Cloud is flooding the AI zone

The $100 billion partnership between Nvidia and OpenAI, announced Monday, is the latest mega-deal to reshape the AI infrastructure market. The pact — involving nonvoting shares, massive chip purchases, and computing power equivalent to what more than 5 million U.S. households consume — tightens the bond between two of the industry’s most influential players.

But while rivals double down on exclusivity, Google Cloud is taking a different approach: moving aggressively to secure the next generation of AI companies before they grow too large to win over.

At the center of that effort is Francis deSouza, Google Cloud’s COO since January. DeSouza brings a unique vantage point — as former CEO of Illumina, where he watched machine learning transform drug discovery, and as co-founder of Synth Labs, an AI alignment startup tackling model safety. Now, he’s steering Google Cloud’s bid to dominate what he calls the second wave of AI adoption.

DeSouza prefers to make his case in numbers. In a recent conversation, he highlighted that:

9 of the top 10 AI labs use Google infrastructure.

Nearly all generative AI unicorns run on Google Cloud.

60% of GenAI startups worldwide have chosen Google as their cloud provider.

The company has already secured $58 billion in new revenue commitments over the next two years — more than double its current annual run rate.

The message is clear: while competitors are forging marquee alliances, Google Cloud is saturating the field, ensuring it’s the default platform for tomorrow’s breakout AI companies.
