Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Cursor Expands AI Coding Capabilities with Graphite Acquisition

Cursor Expands AI Coding Capabilities with Graphite Acquisition:

Cursor, the AI-powered coding assistant, has acquired Graphite, an AI-driven code review and debugging startup, further strengthening its developer tooling ecosystem.
While financial details were not officially disclosed, Axios reported that Cursor paid significantly more than Graphite’s most recent valuation of $290 million. That valuation was established earlier this year when the five-year-old startup raised $52 million in a Series B round.
The acquisition is a strategic fit. AI-generated code often contains errors, requiring engineers to spend substantial time reviewing and fixing issues. Although Cursor already provides AI-based code review through its Bugbot feature, Graphite brings a differentiated capability known as “stacked pull requests.” This allows developers to work on multiple interdependent code changes at the same time, without waiting for individual approvals—streamlining complex development workflows.
By integrating AI-powered code generation with advanced AI-driven code review, Cursor aims to accelerate the entire software development lifecycle, from writing code to deploying it in production.

Graphite operates in a growing and competitive space. Other companies offering AI-based code review tools include CodeRabbit, which reached a $550 million valuation in September, and Greptile, a smaller player that announced a $25 million Series A funding round this fall.
Cursor co-founder and CEO Michael Truell first connected with Graphite’s founders—Merrill Lutsky, Greg Foster, and Tomas Reimers—before launching Cursor, during his time as a Neo Scholar. Neo, the early-stage venture firm founded by Ali Partovi, backed Graphite at the seed stage, according to PitchBook. The two companies also share notable investors, including Accel and Andreessen Horowitz, further underscoring their close ties within the startup ecosystem.
