ChatGPT Introduces Age Prediction to Better Protect Younger Users:

As concerns grow over the effects of artificial intelligence on children and teens, OpenAI has rolled out a new “age prediction” feature in ChatGPT aimed at identifying underage users and automatically applying appropriate content safeguards.

OpenAI has faced increasing scrutiny over how ChatGPT interacts with young people. In recent years, the chatbot has been linked to serious incidents involving teens, and the company has also been criticized—along with other AI providers—for allowing discussions of sexual or sensitive topics with minors. In April of last year, OpenAI addressed a flaw that allowed ChatGPT to generate explicit content for users under 18.

The new age prediction system builds on protections OpenAI already has in place. According to a blog post published Tuesday, the feature uses an AI model that evaluates a range of “behavioral and account-level signals” to estimate whether a user may be underage.

These signals include factors such as the age a user claims to be, how long the account has existed, and typical usage patterns like the times of day the account is active. When the system flags an account as belonging to someone under 18, ChatGPT automatically enforces stricter content filters that limit discussions involving sex, violence, and other sensitive subjects.

OpenAI says users who are incorrectly identified as minors have a way to restore full access. In such cases, users can verify their age by submitting a selfie through OpenAI’s identity verification partner, Persona, to confirm they are adults.
