Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Adobe to Discontinue Animate in Shift Toward AI Strategy

Adobe to Discontinue Animate in Shift Toward AI Strategy:

Adobe is shutting down its long-running 2D animation software, Adobe Animate, as the company continues to prioritize investments in artificial intelligence. In an update posted to its support site on Monday, Adobe confirmed that Animate will be officially discontinued on March 1, 2026. Customers were also notified via email about the decision.

Enterprise users will still have access to technical support through March 1, 2029, to help with the transition. Other customers will receive support only until March 2026.

The announcement has sparked strong reactions from the animation community. Many users expressed frustration and disbelief, pointing to the lack of comparable tools that match Animate’s capabilities. Some took to social media to urge Adobe to open-source the software rather than retire it entirely. Critics argued that Animate has been a key reason many creators subscribe to Adobe’s products in the first place.

In a published FAQ, Adobe defended its decision, stating that Animate has been part of the creative ecosystem for more than 25 years and has fulfilled its role in shaping the animation industry. The company said evolving technologies and emerging platforms now better meet user needs, prompting the move to phase out the software.
