Mandy Moore Defends GoFundMe Campaign Amid Online Criticism Over Family Fire Loss
Mandy Moore has recently shared her frustration with online critics who questioned her decision to support her family through a GoFundMe campaign. The actress, whose net worth is estimated at $14 million, defended her actions after some individuals criticized her for not simply helping her family financially, considering her wealth. Moore emphasized that the GoFundMe was created by a close friend, Matt, and she shared the campaign after numerous people asked how they could help. She stated that the criticism was unhelpful and insensitive, especially since she too had just experienced a devastating loss due to a fire that destroyed much of her life and home.
Moore's brother-in-law and sister-in-law were directly impacted by the fire, losing their home and all of their belongings just weeks before they were expecting their first child. Additionally, her brother-in-law, Griffin, a touring musician, lost his entire set of drums and percussion instruments, which he depends on for his livelihood. Moore’s heartfelt message on Instagram encouraged others to contribute to the GoFundMe to help them rebuild their lives. The fire’s toll on her family was compounded by the devastation caused to her own home, which was partially damaged but still deemed unlovable.
Despite the outpouring of support from Moore's fans, she faced negative comments questioning why, as a wealthy celebrity, she couldn’t simply buy a new home for her family. One commenter questioned, "Your millionaires, can’t you help them?" While the negative responses were difficult to ignore, many fans defended Moore, urging others to lead with empathy. A supportive fan wrote, “If you don’t want to donate to this family, then don’t, but I hope you donate to other organizations in need because there are so many. Please try to lead with empathy.”
The GoFundMe campaign set out to raise $145,000 and has already received $142,000 in donations, with actor Zachary Levi among the prominent donors contributing $10,000. The campaign was initiated by Hillary Duff's husband, Matthew Komo, who sought to help his close friends during this challenging time. As the fire crisis continues to affect Los Angeles, the support for Moore's family has been crucial in helping them navigate the aftermath of the disaster.
In addition to her family's tragedy, Moore shared her own emotional experience, explaining that while her home was still standing, it had been severely damaged by the fire. She expressed survivor’s guilt as she witnessed the destruction of every house on her street, including the homes of her in-laws. Despite the loss, Moore remained focused on helping those in need, offering a reminder of the importance of empathy in times of tragedy.
