Mahonri Schwallier has resigned as the head coach of the Samoa :
Mahonri Schwallier has resigned as the head coach of the Samoa men's rugby team while facing serious criminal charges. Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi, chairman of the Samoa Rugby Union, confirmed on Tuesday that Schwalger's resignation had been accepted by the board.
Schwallier had been suspended in September after being charged with unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault, and common assault. He is currently on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on April 28.
Malielegaoi stated that Schwallier's resignation followed his suspension due to the criminal charges against him. The statement was shared via social media. Mahonri Schwallier has been charged with sexual misconduct involving a person under the age of 16. Despite this serious legal matter, under his leadership, Manu Samoa achieved notable successes in 2024, including a historic win over Tier 1 nation Italy on home soil and a strong showing in the Pacific Nations Cup.
The Samoa Rugby Union, or Alkali Samoa, has confirmed that it will begin the search for a new head coach, while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the continued growth and success of the Manu Samoa team at the highest levels of international rugby.
Schwalbe was appointed head coach in April 2023, following the resignation of So ilala Mausam, who led the team to the 2023 World Cup in France. A former Samoa captain, Schwallier earned 40 caps as a hooker for his national team. He also played for top clubs, including Sale and Scarlets in the UK, and for the Hurricanes, Highlanders, and Chiefs in Super Rugby.
