Brydon Carse's Rapid Rise Puts Durham's 2025 Hopes on Hold
Brydon Carse’s meteoric rise on the international cricket scene has left Durham with little expectation of seeing him in action for the county in 2025. The 29-year-old fast bowler, who has taken 27 wickets in his first five Test appearances against Pakistan and New Zealand, is now part of England’s squad for their limited-overs tour of India and next month’s Champions Trophy. With an IPL stint on the horizon and a significant role expected in England’s upcoming home Test series against India, Carse’s county commitments appear slim.
Durham’s newly appointed club captain, Alex Lees, admitted the club doesn't foresee Carse’s return, acknowledging his remarkable form that has kept him on the international radar. "He's done so well, we’re not forecasting to have him at all," Lees said.
This success is a stark contrast to just five months ago when Carse faced suspension due to historical betting offenses. Lees reflected on how that challenging time indirectly benefited Carse, allowing him to focus on his fitness and return stronger than ever. "His ball speed is more consistent now, around 90 miles per hour, and his best spell is good enough for any attack in the world."
Lees also believes that playing in an elite environment like England’s will only bring out more of Carse’s potential. "England will get a better version of Brydon compared to county cricket," he noted, pointing out his ability to contribute with the bat as well. Carse’s all-around skills are seen as a vital asset, and though he hasn't yet showcased his batting fully at the international level, his first-class record of averaging 30 with the bat offers hope for more in the future.
As England prepares for a five-match T20 series against India, Carse's versatility could be key. Meanwhile, Saqib Mahmood, another member of the squad, faced a delay in joining the team due to visa issues but is set to feature in the tour alongside Carse, as England gears up for next year’s T20 World Cup.
