The hidden critique woven into Melania Trump's inauguration ball gown is bound to astonish fashion enthusiasts and Jill Biden alike, as revealed by JANE TIPPETT.

The hidden critique woven into Melania Trump's inauguration ball gown:

As the First Lady gracefully made her entrance at the Commander-in-Chief Ball, one of the three inaugural festivities, she once again turned to her trusted stylist, Herve Pierre. On this occasion, he dressed her in a breathtaking custom strapless gown crafted from white silk crepe, accentuated with bold black silk gazar trim.

The contrast of black and white created a visually striking effect. Pierre noted that the design was Melania's own choice, reflecting her commitment to her personal style and vision. In contrast to her stepdaughter Ivanka Trump's floral extravagance—an exact replica of Audrey Hepburn's 1954 Givenchy gown from "Sabrina"—Melania's selection served as a subtle nod to mid-20th century fashion.

While Melania also drew inspiration from Hepburn, she did so by channeling a more iconic role from cinema. Pierre, who admires British photographer and costume designer Cecil Beaton, likely recognized the fashion potential in Hepburn's portrayal in "My Fair Lady," a film that features a transformation of an ingenue into a star while adorned in black and white couture designed by Beaton.

Completing Melania's homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood was a borrowed diamond flower brooch from 1955, crafted by the renowned American jeweler Harry Winston, which she wore on a black ribbon choker. Pierre remarked that the jewelry's design echoed the gown's theme, with a ribbon encircling flowers, suggesting that Melania herself was the bouquet.
