Taylor Swift fans were left in shock after reports emerged of "preliminary talks" for a potential new concert

Taylor Swift fans were thrilled this week following reports of potential new performances by the global superstar. Officials in Shanghai have reportedly entered preliminary discussions with Swift's team to bring her to the city, according to a city representative cited by Chinese news outlet The Paper on Tuesday, via Reuters. The announcement surprised many loyal Swifties, as it was widely assumed that the 35-year-old artist would take an extended break after completing her monumental Eras Tour in early December.

The tour, which spanned five continents and featured 149 performances, concluded with a three-night series in Vancouver, Canada, marking the end of a whirlwind journey from March 2023 through late 2024. "Now this is what GLOBAL impact looks like!" a fan exclaimed on X (formerly Twitter) in response to the news of the talks. Notably, Swift, who recently announced a $1.7 million renovation of her Rhode Island mansion, did not include China in her Eras Tour itinerary, despite hosting multiple shows in Japan and Singapore.

Fans eagerly await confirmation, hoping the pop icon will extend her already record-breaking tour to new audiences in Shanghai. Taylor Swift fans were ecstatic this week after news broke about potential new performances by the best-selling artist; she was photographed on December 6 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Authorities in Shanghai have been in 'preliminary talks with Swift's team, hoping to bring her to perform in the metropolis, a city official told the Chinese outlet The Paper on Tuesday, via Reuters. The city's skyline is pictured on August 14.

"Now this right here is GLOBAL impact!" exclaimed one fan on X (formerly Twitter) after news of the potential talks broke. Swift is expected to be warmly welcomed if a deal is made for Shanghai performances, as she has a massive fan base throughout China. Zhang Qi, the deputy director of Shanghai's culture and tourism bureau, told The Paper that he and other city officials had participated in meetings with Swift's team to discuss the possibility of new shows.
"As for whether it can take place in the end, we feel that it will have to depend on the market and the attractiveness of the city of Shanghai," said Zhang Qi. "But we are optimistic that there may be hope this year."

Shanghai, a major financial hub, is the most populous city in China, with 24.2 million residents. However, China boasts numerous other enormous cities that would likely welcome multiple Taylor Swift concerts. Swift's Eras Tour became the first tour to earn over $1 billion in revenue, ultimately grossing over $2 billion. The concerts brought significant economic benefits to the cities where they were held, as fans traveled there for the shows and supported local businesses. On X, many fans pointed out just how popular Swift is in China following the news of the potential Shanghai talks.
