Tim Chen has quickly emerged as one of the most in-demand solo investors in venture capital
Chen, who runs Essence VC, just closed his fourth fund—$41 million—without even trying. According to him, limited partners were so eager to get in that they preempted the process, leaving him no time to even prepare a pitch deck.
While $41 million may seem modest compared to multibillion-dollar firms or other solo VCs like Jack Altman, who recently raised a $275 million fund, Chen’s decision was intentional. He simply didn’t want to take on more capital. Even so, the new fund is a meaningful step up from his earlier ones: $27 million in 2022, $5 million in his second, and just $1 million in his first.
Chen wasn’t planning to fundraise again so soon, since he was still deploying capital from his third fund until just last month. But momentum shifted after one of his second-fund bets, Tabular, was acquired by Databricks for about $2.2 billion in 2024.
“That basically returned our entire fund,” Chen told TechCrunch, adding that the deal put him “on the map.” Since then, his name has been circulating widely—on cap tables, among fellow VCs, and in founders’ conversations. LPs, eager not to miss out, started lining up.
Part of Chen’s appeal lies in his niche: he focuses on early-stage startups building developer tools and infrastructure, a sector gaining even more traction in the AI era.
His credibility stems from his own technical background. Chen began as a software engineer and was an early employee at Mesosphere, a once-hot open-source cloud infrastructure company backed by Microsoft and HPE. He later co-founded Hyperpilot, an “AIops” startup that Cloudera acquired in 2018.
By 2019, Chen had shifted into angel investing and quickly realized his knack for spotting and supporting deeply technical founders. He backed companies like Jasper, Flatfile, and MotherDuck, earning a reputation among founders as a go-to early supporter. “I really enjoyed it,” Chen recalled. “Founders kept loving me, kept telling all their friends.”
