Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Tesla Recalls Powerwall 2 Batteries in Australia Over Fire Risk

Tesla Recalls Powerwall 2 Batteries in Australia Over Fire Risk:

Tesla is recalling its Powerwall 2 home batteries in Australia after reports of fires that caused minor property damage, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The recall covers an undisclosed number of Powerwall 2 units manufactured in the U.S. and sold between November 2020 and June 2022. The affected batteries contain cells supplied by a third-party manufacturer. While no injuries have been reported, the ACCC confirmed the fire risk in its recall notice.

The Powerwall 2, which provides 14 kWh of lithium-ion storage, is typically paired with solar panels to store excess daytime energy. Customers can also link their batteries to a virtual power plant, enabling them to support the grid during peak demand. This program extends the product warranty to up to 15 years and provides access to time-of-use rates that can lower household energy costs.

Homeowners will be notified through the Tesla app if their device is affected. As a precaution, Tesla is remotely discharging recalled batteries to minimize fire risks. Faulty units will be replaced free of charge, and Tesla has stated it will review compensation claims for lost energy savings on a case-by-case basis.
