Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Prevent Autoplay to Save Data and Avoid Distractions on Social Media

Prevent Autoplay to Save Data and Avoid Distractions on Social Media:

There are times when you may want to stop videos and GIFs from autoplaying in your social media feeds. Maybe you’re trying to save mobile data, avoid addictive scrolling, or simply keep control over what you see—especially when viral clips are circulating that you’d rather skip. Whatever the reason, here’s how to disable autoplay on the most popular platforms:

Facebook:
Tap your profile picture (top right on desktop, bottom bar on mobile).
Go to Settings & Privacy > Preferences > Media.
Under Video Playback, select Never to stop videos from autoplaying in your feed and Stories.
Quick path: Settings > Preferences > Media > Video Playback > Never

Instagram:
Open your profile by tapping your picture (bottom right).
Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines, top right).
Go to Settings and activity > Your app and media > Media quality.
Toggle on Use less cellular data.

Note: Instagram doesn’t offer a strict “disable autoplay” option. This setting slows playback when off Wi-Fi, and videos won’t start with sound unless you tap them.

Quick path: Profile > Settings and activity > Your app and media > Media quality > Use less cellular data
X (formerly Twitter)
Tap your profile picture (top left) to open the sidebar (on desktop, it’s already visible).
Select Settings and privacy (on mobile, tap the three dots to see more options).
Go to Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage.
Turn off Video autoplay.
