Microsoft Adds Anthropic’s AI Models to Copilot

Microsoft is expanding the intelligence behind its Copilot assistant by integrating AI models from Anthropic, the fast-rising rival to OpenAI. Starting this week, Copilot business users will gain access to Claude Opus 4.1 and Claude Sonnet 4, in addition to the OpenAI models that have long powered the platform.

The move comes just weeks after Microsoft announced it would bring Anthropic’s AI into Office 365 apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook, signaling a gradual shift away from the exclusivity of its historic OpenAI partnership. By broadening its portfolio of AI providers, Microsoft is not only hedging against overreliance on a single partner but also giving enterprises more flexibility in how they deploy generative AI.

The models bring distinct capabilities to Copilot:

Claude Opus 4.1: Optimized for complex reasoning, advanced coding, and long-horizon planning, making it well-suited for tasks like enterprise architecture, in-depth research, and multi-step workflows.

Claude Sonnet 4: Designed for efficiency and scale, supporting routine development tasks, data-heavy processing, and content generation at speed.

By offering a choice between OpenAI’s deep reasoning models and Anthropic’s Claude family, Microsoft is effectively turning Copilot into a multi-model AI platform. Business users can select the model best suited for their workload, whether that’s strategic problem-solving, building custom AI agents, or handling large-scale data pipelines.

The decision underscores how quickly the enterprise AI ecosystem is evolving. OpenAI may still dominate headlines, but Anthropic — valued at over $180 billion as of September 2025 — is becoming a credible counterweight. For Microsoft, weaving Anthropic into Copilot ensures its flagship AI assistant remains competitive, versatile, and aligned with customer demands for choice, control, and reliability.
