Huawei is doubling down on artificial intelligence hardware as it looks to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the global AI chip market.
At its Huawei Connect 2025 conference in Shenzhen on Thursday, the Chinese tech giant announced a new SuperPoD Interconnect technology designed to supercharge compute power. The system can link up to 15,000 graphics cards—including Huawei’s own Ascend AI chips—to work together as one massive compute cluster.
A Direct Competitor to Nvidia’s NVLink:
The technology appears to be Huawei’s answer to Nvidia’s NVLink, which allows AI accelerators to communicate with each other at extremely high speeds. By enabling dense clustering of thousands of chips, Huawei’s new interconnect provides the scalability needed to train increasingly large and complex AI models.
While Huawei’s Ascend AI chips are generally considered less powerful than Nvidia’s leading H100 and upcoming B-series GPUs, the ability to tightly couple thousands of them gives customers access to far greater aggregate compute. This approach could help Huawei narrow the performance gap in workloads like large language model training, multimodal AI, and high-performance computing (HPC).
Rising Stakes in the China–U.S. Tech Battle
The timing of Huawei’s announcement is notable. Just a day earlier, reports confirmed that China banned domestic firms from purchasing Nvidia hardware, including the newly introduced RTX Pro 600D servers tailored for the Chinese market. This follows broader U.S. export controls aimed at limiting China’s access to advanced semiconductors, especially GPUs critical for AI development.
By unveiling its SuperPoD Interconnect now, Huawei is positioning itself as the go-to domestic alternative for Chinese companies suddenly cut off from Nvidia’s supply. The move underscores China’s broader strategy to accelerate self-reliance in critical technologies amid intensifying geopolitical and trade restrictions.
The Bigger Picture
As AI systems grow in scale and sophistication, compute infrastructure is becoming the defining bottleneck. Huawei’s new architecture may not yet match Nvidia’s raw chip performance, but its focus on scalability, interconnectivity, and ecosystem resilience could give it an edge in China’s massive AI market.
If Huawei can attract enough adoption and optimize its software stack for large-scale training, the SuperPoD Interconnect could mark a significant step in reducing China’s dependence on U.S. semiconductor technology while reshaping the global AI hardware race.
