Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Google Launches Experimental Windows Search App with AI and Google Lens

Google Launches Experimental Windows Search App with AI and Google Lens:

Google announced on Tuesday the release of a new experimental search app for Windows PCs, designed to help users find information and files more quickly. The app introduces a universal search bar, activated by the keyboard shortcut Alt + Space, that allows users to instantly search across multiple sources — including files stored locally on their computer, installed applications, Google Drive documents, and the web.

The experience is reminiscent of Apple’s Spotlight search on macOS, which has long enabled Mac users to quickly locate files, launch apps, or perform web queries from a single interface. With this move, Google is aiming to bring a similarly streamlined experience to Windows users, enhanced with its own search and AI capabilities.

Key Features:

Integrated Google Lens:
The app comes with Google Lens built in, enabling users to highlight and search anything visible on their screen. This means tasks like translating foreign-language text in images, solving math problems, or identifying objects can be done instantly without switching applications.

AI-Powered Search:
The app supports Google’s AI Mode, allowing users to ask complex, multi-part questions and receive deeper, contextual responses. For example, a user could ask for travel recommendations, request summaries of multiple documents, or get coding help, all within the same interface.

Customizable Results:
Users can toggle between different result categories — including All Results, AI Mode, Images, Shopping, and Videos — to refine their search experience.

User-Friendly Options:
A dark mode is available for those who prefer a more comfortable viewing experience during nighttime use.

Availability:

The app is currently being offered through Search Labs, Google’s experimental program that allows participants to try early-stage features and provide feedback. At launch, the app is only available in English and limited to users in the United States. To install it, a Windows 10 or later PC is required.

By blending traditional file search, cloud integration, and AI-enhanced results, Google is positioning this tool as a powerful productivity aid for Windows users. If successful, the app could become a core part of how people navigate both their devices and the web.
