Google Expands AI Mode to Five New Languages, Broadening Global Reach

Google is taking a major step in its AI-powered search journey by expanding “AI Mode” to five additional languages: Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese.

The rollout, announced on Monday, marks the first time AI Mode has gone beyond English, which it had been limited to for more than six months. This update follows Google’s expansion of the English-language version of AI Mode to 180 new markets worldwide last month, after its initial launch in the U.S. and later expansions to the U.K. and India.

Making AI Search More Accessible Globally

“With this expansion, more people can now use AI Mode to ask complex questions in their preferred language, while exploring the web more deeply,” said Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search, in a company blog post.

The move reflects Google’s push to make its AI-driven search experience more inclusive and globally accessible. By supporting widely spoken languages across Asia and Latin America, Google is positioning AI Mode as a tool for billions of non-English speakers, tapping into high-growth digital markets.

AI Mode: Google’s Answer to AI Search Rivals:


Originally launched in March 2025 as an experiment for Google One AI Premium subscribers, AI Mode represents Google’s most ambitious effort yet to reimagine search in the AI era. The experience is powered by a customized version of Gemini 2.5, Google’s flagship multimodal model with advanced reasoning capabilities.

The feature competes directly with AI-first search platforms such as Perplexity and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search, both of which are redefining how users interact with the web.

Going Beyond Search: Agentic Features


Google has steadily upgraded AI Mode with what it calls “agentic capabilities.” In August, the company introduced features that let the AI book restaurant reservations, with plans to extend support for local service appointments and event ticket bookings in the near future.

Currently, these agentic features are part of an experimental Labs program and remain exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., a premium tier priced at $249.99 per month. This tier signals Google’s strategy to monetize advanced AI features for power users and enterprise professionals.

As a dedicated tab on Google’s search results page.

As a button integrated directly into the search bar.

But this setup may soon change. According to Logan Kilpatrick, Group Product Manager at Google DeepMind, Google is working toward making AI Mode the default search experience — a move that would fundamentally shift how billions of users interact with Google Search.

Criticism and Industry Impact:

While Google touts AI Mode as a way to enrich user experience, the company has faced criticism from publishers and website owners. Many argue that AI-generated answers reduce clicks to external websites, cutting into traffic that fuels the web’s information ecosystem.

Google, however, pushed back against these claims last month, stating that AI Overviews and AI Mode are not designed to kill traffic, but to help users find better answers more quickly.
