Gemini Surges to No. 1 on the App Store with Nano Banana AI Image Model:

Gemini’s mobile app has skyrocketed to the top of global app store charts, driven by the August release of its new Nano Banana AI image editing model. The feature has earned widespread praise for making advanced edits and creating realistic images more accessible to everyday users.

According to data from Appfigures, Gemini downloads jumped 45% month-over-month in September, with 12.6 million installs recorded so far, compared to 8.7 million in August. The surge pushed Gemini to the No. 1 spot on the U.S. App Store on September 12, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Previously, Gemini had only climbed as high as No. 3, back in January 2025.

Globally, Gemini is now among the top five iPhone apps in 108 countries. On Google Play, the app climbed from No. 26 overall on September 8 to No. 2 by September 15, though ChatGPT still holds the top spot on Android.

Google executives have been highlighting the momentum. On September 8, Google Gemini and Labs VP Josh Woodward revealed that Nano Banana helped bring in 23 million first-time users, who have already shared over 500 million images.

The growth is also translating into strong revenue gains. Of the $6.3 million Gemini has generated on iOS this year, $1.6 million came in August alone, reflecting a 1,291% increase from January’s $115,000. With September revenue already at $792,000 halfway through the month, the app is on track to match or surpass August’s total.

Since launching on Android in February 2024 and later expanding to iOS, Gemini has been downloaded 185.4 million times worldwide, including 103.7 million downloads in 2025 alone.
