Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Cohere Hits $7B Valuation with Fresh $100M Raise, Partners With AMD

Cohere Hits $7B Valuation with Fresh $100M Raise, Partners With AMD

Enterprise AI startup Cohere has raised an additional $100 million, pushing its valuation to $7 billion just a month after its last funding announcement. The new capital is an extension of its $500 million oversubscribed round in August, which valued the company at $6.8 billion.

Alongside the raise, Cohere revealed a strategic partnership with AMD, one of its investors. In contrast to rival OpenAI, which recently secured an up-to-$100 billion deal with GPU giant Nvidia, Cohere is aligning with Nvidia’s main competitor. Under the deal, Cohere’s Command-family AI models — including Command Vision, Translate, and Reasoning — are now optimized to run on AMD’s Instinct GPUs. AMD will also become a Cohere customer, adopting the company’s AI models internally. Still, Cohere emphasized it will continue supporting Nvidia GPUs, not shifting exclusively to AMD.

Founded in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, co-author of the landmark “transformer” paper, Cohere was once seen as a frontrunner in the generative AI race. But in today’s market, where OpenAI is reportedly valued at $500 billion and Anthropic at $183 billion, Cohere’s rapid rise to $7 billion feels more measured by comparison.

Cohere has carved out a niche by focusing squarely on the enterprise AI market. The company emphasizes AI sovereignty — giving organizations control over their own data and models, rather than outsourcing to foreign-owned providers. That positioning helped attract new backers in this extension round, including the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Nexxus Capital Management, which focuses on Mexico and Iberia markets.

With its latest raise and strategic GPU alignment, Cohere is doubling down on its enterprise-first strategy, even as competition in the generative AI sector intensifies.
