Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: AI Breakthrough Lets Sortera Unlock High-Value Aluminum Recycling

AI Breakthrough Lets Sortera Unlock High-Value Aluminum Recycling:

Aluminum is one of the most recyclable materials on the planet — it can be reused endlessly and is far more energy-efficient to recycle than to produce from scratch. Yet in the U.S., only about one-third of aluminum ends up being recycled. A major obstacle is the difficulty of sorting mixed aluminum scrap, a problem that has challenged the recycling industry for decades.

Michael Siemer, CEO of Sortera, believes his company has finally cracked the code. Sortera claims to have created a system capable of separating aluminum alloys with more than 95% accuracy, a breakthrough that could tap into a vast, previously unreachable supply of recyclable material. The system relies on an AI model that identifies aluminum grades using data from lasers, X-ray fluorescence, and high-speed cameras. Each piece of scrap—roughly the size of a potato chip—must be analyzed in mere milliseconds. “Ten milliseconds is a long time,” Siemer notes. When the AI determines the grade, a row of air nozzles delivers quick, targeted bursts to divert the chip into the correct bin.

This speed and precision are crucial because traditional recycling operations have to melt aluminum before determining its alloy type. When alloys can’t be sorted accurately, the mixed material loses significant value because buyers can’t trust its performance characteristics. “People have been wanting to go after this unsorted aluminum, and nobody’s been able to unlock it,” Siemer says.

Sortera’s high sorting accuracy has also helped the company achieve what most startups strive for: profitability. “The margin is exponential above 90%,” Siemer explains. “At 92%, you get a solid margin. At 95%, you get a strong margin. At 98%, the margin is enormous.”
