Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: The Strange Spectacle of Bryan Johnson’s Livestreamed Psychedelic Experiment

The Strange Spectacle of Bryan Johnson’s Livestreamed Psychedelic Experiment:

When I was 18, I once bought a cheap ticket through my college’s Facebook group to see Grimes perform at a local music festival. In the middle of the crowd on that bright afternoon, I watched a clearly intoxicated man repeatedly attempt to climb a young, fragile tree to get a better view. It was obviously impossible — the thin trunk could barely support a squirrel, let alone a full-grown adult — but he kept trying, fixated on a task that defied basic physics. I remember feeling equal parts fascinated and horrified.

More than a decade later, I found myself in an unsettlingly similar situation. I watched Grimes perform again on Sunday — but this time, her DJ set was part of a livestream for a very different kind of spectacle: Bryan Johnson’s psychedelic self-experiment. The investor and entrepreneur broadcast himself consuming a massive 5.24-gram dose of psilocybin mushrooms in an attempt to determine whether psychedelics could aid his ongoing quest for immortality.

Bryan Johnson — who made his fortune selling his fintech startup Braintree — has made it his mission to live forever. He chronicles every step publicly on social media: receiving plasma infusions from his teenage son, swallowing more than 100 supplements daily, and even injecting Botox into his genitals. His extreme attempts to outrun aging double as a continuous advertisement for his ventures, including Kernel, his neurotechnology company, and Blueprint, a brand that sells supplements, nut butters, and olive oil.
