Hospitals adapting to the resurgence of viral infections
Hospitals across the United States are witnessing a subtle resurgence of face mask mandates, driven by rising concerns over what experts are labeling a 'quad-emic.' This situation involves a surge in four viral infections: influenza, COVID-19, the cold-like virus RSV, and norovirus, which have led to around 15 million cases and 30,000 deaths this winter.
In response to this outbreak, Duke Health in North Carolina and Mass General Brigham in Massachusetts have both revised their masking and visitor protocols this week. Consequently, hospitals in at least eight states, including Wisconsin, California, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, and New York, are either requiring or strongly recommending mask usage indoors.
This action comes amid heightened worries about a viral outbreak in China that has reportedly overwhelmed hospitals in Northern provinces. Mass General, which caters to 2.5 million patients and comprises 12 hospitals and clinics across Massachusetts, has elevated its respiratory virus activity status to 'high' for most of its facilities.
