Chinese Five-Spice Powder Recalled in 15 States Due to Lead Contamination Concerns

A brand of five-spice powder widely used in Chinese cuisine is being recalled across 15 states due to potential lead contamination.
The FDA announced a recall of 62 cases of the product known as Yu Yee, Five Spice Powder, which was sold in small neighborhood shops.

This is a Class II recall, indicating that health officials believe there is a possibility of "temporary or medically reversible" health effects for consumers.
The spice, a well-known blend celebrated for its fusion of sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami flavors, was distributed by Summit Import Corporation, based in New Jersey.
Lead contamination was identified during routine FDA testing, which revealed concerningly "high levels" of the metal.

Exposure to lead is associated with various health problems, including cognitive issues, cancer, and growth delays in children.
Although initially announced in mid-December, the FDA issued an updated alert this week due to heightened concerns regarding the product.

This recall follows other cases, such as the cinnamon pouches recalled in August over lead contamination.

The recalled Yu Yee Five Spice Powder was packaged in 1.76oz containers, typical for small spice jars.
It was distributed in the following states: New York, Virginia, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, Alaska, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

These states are primarily located in the northeastern US, parts of the Central US, and the South along the coast. Once ingested, lead can circulate throughout the body via the bloodstream, accumulating in soft tissues like the kidneys, liver, or lungs, and causing damage to these organs.
The degree of bodily response to lead varies based on age, body weight, and exposure levels. Health officials emphasize that there is no safe threshold for lead exposure.

In larger doses or with repeated exposure, lead has been linked to behavioral issues, stunted growth, and learning difficulties, affecting many children in the past year.

Certain studies indicate that lead exposure is associated with various cancers, including those of the stomach, lungs, kidneys, and brain.
This spice blend is commonly used in dishes like beef stew and Cantonese roast duck within Chinese cooking.
While the specific combination of spices may differ, it typically includes star anise, cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns, and fennel seeds.

Some variations may also add spices such as ginger or cardamom.
